From Monolith to Microgateway – A Success Story of Replacing Apigee with NGINX
In 2012 mobilcom‑debitel decided to rethink its application delivery strategies and to focus more closely on the rising topic of APIs. In order to publish and maintain its APIs, the company introduced Apigee as its API gateway solution. Over time it turned out that Apigee was not the ideal product for mobilcom‑debitel’s workflows and developer mentality. In search of a simplified solution that would reduce operational complexity and allow them to focus on the “core” use cases of an API gateway, Felix’s team came across NGINX.
In this session, Felix describes the rationale behind his team’s migration from Apigee, the challenges they faced, and the solutions they found in NGINX, an API gateway that’s secure, easy to maintain, and provides a great developer experience.
This talk is for you if you want to know why (or when?) it makes sense to prefer NGINX over a full‑fledged API management solution like Apigee. Felix also provides useful insight into how to deal not only with authentication but also with authorization (especially OAuth2 and OpenID Connect).
