Joining the Istio Networking Working Group, NGINX is Accelerating Load Balancing and Proxying Capabilities for Modern Software Applications
San Francisco, CA – September 7, 2017 – NGINX, Inc., the engine delivering sites and applications for the modern web, today announced the open source implementation of NGINX as a service proxy for Layer 7 load balancing and proxying within the Istio platform. It will provide key capabilities and integration with Istio deployed as a sidecar container to facilitate communication between services in a standard, reliable, and secure manner. Additionally, NGINX will collaborate as part of the Istio community by joining the Istio networking group.
Istio is an open source project led by Google, IBM, and others to connect, manage, and secure microservices. It allows companies to implement loosely coupled microservices-based applications, and an underlying service mesh to manage traffic flows between services, enforce access policies, and aggregate telemetry data. NGINX offers a small footprint, high-performance proxy with advanced load balancing algorithms, caching, SSL termination, and API gateway extensibility through a broad range of third-party modules, scriptability with Lua and nginScript, and various security features with granular access control.
“As a leading provider of tools that help companies scale with broad functionality in modern environments, NGINX is a natural extension of Istio,” said Gus Robertson, CEO of NGINX. “A service mesh is highly dependent on the strength of its proxy, and NGINX is the most powerful service proxy on the market today. NGINX is already in use by the majority of the top million most visited sites on the web, and we look forward to bringing the NGINX community to Istio to accelerate the transition toward agile, microservices-based environments.”
As part of its commitment to helping customers implement microservices, NGINX has also introduced the Microservices Reference Architecture, a series of traffic management patterns from Proxy Model to Router Mesh. By implementing these patterns and leveraging the Istio control plane, modern applications can be assembled and deployed with ease while traffic management, encryption, health checks, policy enforcement, and more are handled by the NGINX service proxy.
“The Istio project is composed of innovative companies and developers who are collaborating on the next generation of services based architectures,” said Varun Talwar, product management lead for Istio at Google. “We are excited to have NGINX join the Istio community as it is a widely used, highly performant and trusted product, and many NGINX customers would like to make securing, monitoring, and managing microservices easier using Istio. We welcome them to the community and look forward to their contributions to the Istio project.”
The NGINX service proxy and mixer module for traffic routing are available as a Docker container on Github at https://github.com/nginmesh/nginmesh.
