The work with Netflix included design, implementation, and tuning of the nginx web server software and the underlying operating system as well as product technical support. Support services are the basis of NGINX, Inc.’s commercial offering for companies using its open source web server in mission‑critical applications. NGINX, Inc. announced its support services in February.
“We’re honored that Netflix turned to NGINX, Inc.’s professional services for the complex optimization tasks that this ambitious project required,” said Andrew Alexeev, co‑founder of NGINX, Inc.
Serving more than 26 million streaming members globally, Netflix is the world’s leading Internet subscription service for enjoying movies and TV shows. Netflix has been delivering a billion hours of movies and TV shows per month, constituting petabytes of data, exclusively through commercial content delivery networks. With the goal of a faster, less expensive Internet for all, Netflix recently established Open Connect, its own single‑purpose content delivery network. NGINX, Inc. is backing this unique project to create a fast, scalable, and cost‑efficient solution for streaming video delivery.
“We chose the nginx web server software because of its proven scalability and performance,” said Ken Florance, vice president of content delivery at Netflix. “By working directly with the core engineering team at NGINX, Inc., we received great development support for our project.”
The nginx software is a high‑performance edge web server excelling at large scale content delivery and web acceleration. Its precise integration with modern operating system capabilities allows unprecedented levels of efficiency even when running on commodity hardware. The specialized architecture bolsters Open Connect appliances, with the net result of greatly optimized streaming video services, reduced operating costs, and improved quality of viewing experience. Open Connect appliances running nginx already serve about five percent of the Netflix video traffic. According to Netflix, most of its video will eventually be served from Open Connect.
Used by the busiest websites on the Internet, nginx enables companies to match rapidly increasing demand for faster web experience without incurring unnecessary costs in capital investments or time.
In its almost 10 years of history, nginx has become the key software component of many famous web architectures. Today nginx powers over 25% of the top 1,000 websites, and 70 million websites overall. Successful online services, transforming and shaping the future of Internet – such as Netflix, Pinterest, CloudFlare, Airbnb, WordPress, GitHub, SoundCloud, Zynga, Eventbrite, Zappos, Media Temple, Heroku, RightScale, and Engine Yard – use NGINX software as part of their infrastructure.
NGINX, Inc. was founded as a commercial venture in July 2011 to facilitate the development of nginx. For more information, please visit nginx.com.
